Sacred Heart, also called Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Roman Catholicism, the mystical-physical heart of Jesus as an object of devotion. In addition to a feast, now celebrated on the Friday of the third week after Pentecost, devotion includes acts of consecration and honour given to the image of the Sacred Heart. In Catholic christian churches and homes, one of the most popular images of Jesus is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the image of God’s love revealed in the pierced heart of His Son Jesus. Heart of sacred is the symbol of a love that conquers sin and transcends death, the symbol of the One who loved us to the end. The Sacred Heart most obviously brings to mind the Passion of Christ on the cross. According to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the seventeenth French nun who helped start the devotion, the symbolic meaning of heart of Jesus represents the points of the thorns are the many individual sins of people, pricking the heart of Jesus. As she put it in a letter, recounting the personal vision she had received, “I saw this divine Heart as on a throne of flames, more brilliant than the sun and transparent as crystal. THE DIVINE heart had its adorable wound and was encircled with a crown of thorns, which signified the pricks our sins caused Him.”
